Gray-necked Wood-Rail (Aramides cajaneus)

This bird inhabits swamps and dense rain forest. It is very nervous and will run if you get too close. I saw this bird for the first time on August 20th, 2017 in Fincas Bambuzal, Rio Frio, less than a hundred meters away from my parent’s home. They had sighted a group of those birds foraging in a small creek a few days before. I was luck that one decided to show while I was nearby. It is known in Costa Rica by a few names: Charascuasa, Pomponé and Cucaleca, with the latter one being the one I grew up used to.

Bright pink legs and iris are very distinctive, no other bird resembling a chicken has such bright skin or eyes colors.

It moves slowly, trying to disappear from sight. When startled, it runs pretty fast and seeks for the cover in the understory of forest

It thought I could not see it, but a small space between the leafs let me snap this picture.
