Great Potoo (Nyctibius grandis)

The Great Potoo is a cryptic bird that is well camouflaged; it can even look like an extension of a branch when perched. With the eyes and beak wide open, they look like really strange creatures. Yet their singular form is fascinating. These pictures of a juvenile were taken near Guapiles, on July 2nd, 2017, during a guided birdwatching tour with the Fundación de Rapaces de Costa Rica. We had seen the adult perch on this same area three months ago, during a birdwatching trip with Asociación Ornitológica de Costa Rica, but this time it was not there. Back then, the juvenile was really small and could be seen just barely.

From time to time, the juvenile would open the black eyes, and close them again, seemingly unaware of our presence.

The Cryptic pose of the Great Potoo. This juvenile does contrast a bit with the branch, due to having a paler coloration.

This juvenile was perched relatively low in a branch, near a gravel road.
