Gray Hawk (Buteo plagiatus)

The Gray Hawk is a mid-sized bird of prey. The only individual I have seen was morphing from juvenile to adult plumage, so the combination of barred and streaked underparts made it difficult for me to identify at the start. This individual was seen in Fincas Bambuzal, Rio Frio, Sarapiquí on April 15th, 2017.

It was difficult to identify the species, as the striked pattern is similar to other species…

…however it really is just a juvenile that’s in the process of acquiring the adults’ plumage
