Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea)

The Little Blue Heron is not as little as you would think; the Green Heron for example is smaller. The colors of this bird are amazing, with a deep blue body and magenta neck that is unmistakable. Like other Herons, they inhabit rivers, streams and swamps, and forage through shallow waters, looking for fish and crustaceans and snatching them up with a fast attack.

The pictures below were taken during a boat tour in the Tárcoles River, on June 18th, 2017. The tour was guided by Randall Ortega, an expert birder and owner of Mangrove Birding Journey.
