Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)

Ospreys are predatory birds that eat mostly fish. They perch high in the trees and look for food at ponds and marshes, or even the coast. Their feet are highly adapted to catch the fish as they hover above the water and take the plunge with their feet first. That also has motivated the evolution of specialized features in their feet to be able to hold onto such slippery prey.

The pictures below were taken during a boat tour in the Tárcoles River, on June 18th, 2017. The tour was guided by Randall Ortega, an expert birder and owner of Mangrove Birding Journey.
